The benefits of having a hawaiian massage

Ever heard someone talk about having a Lomi lomi or Ka Huna massage and not known what the heck they were raving on about?

You wouldn't be the first person to admit that. But, also on another level you wouldn't be the first person to

discover just what you've been missing out on all these years you've been living either!

I found out for myself in a big way, back in 2008.

And whilst most of us know how good a good massage can be, most of us have never known or experienced what is referred to as the "Rolls Royce of massages" - that is, Hawaiian massage or bodywork, otherwise known by the names of Lomi lomi (which means to knead (the skin) in Hawaiian) or Ka Huna, which refers to the spirit or the spiritual nature that this massage grants both therapist and client.

Another thing that most people don't realise is the therapeutic nature of a simple massage. Most think of a relaxation massage as being pure indulgence. Just a form of self care or reward. But it goes so much deeper than this, far deeper than the skin that is being manipulated to a joyfilled sense of being that enraptures your very being....have you ever thought about why it exactly feels so good?

There is of course many levels to this. Touch being a major factor. We all need human touch. In fact, when we are born we need it to simply survive. That's why premature babies are taken out of their humidity cribs for regular hugs. Because touch is such an intrinsic human need.

Apart from the physicality, massage is an energy transference between therapist and client. Another thing that Hawaiian massage or Bodywork promotes is the upmost importance of the therapist becoming a clean and sacred vessel (leading a clean and clear life existence) so they can be a more powerful conduit for the healing or spiritual energy that is transferred to the client throughout the process.

Now, I get that must sound a bit strange or even intimidating to some! But there's no sleaziness, black magic or spiritual manipulation within the confines of having a true hawaiian massage session. In contrast, it is very much focused on a higher healing path and faith. The therapist must remain in a peaceful, non judgemental and compassionate state to deliver the awesomeness and healing that these massages deliver!

They will also have to be relatively fit and healthy in body too! Because this is a whole body massage - one that delivers to mind, body and spirit. The massage is best described as being "lulled into a blissful state like warm waves of the ocean washing over you" The therapist almost engages in a dance around the table as they flow with the gentle music, using their hands, fingers, forearms and elbows to sweep away your stress and bring your body back to a state of homeostasis. The place where all the feel good hormones and chemicals release into your body and as such, allows your body to come into a place of healing, that is felt long after the massage has finished.

You see your body can only heal when it is not in a state of fight or flight, when the stress response is not present. That is why it is so important to get a good night's sleep and why stress wreaks such havoc on our body and our wellbeing. It's also why it's so important to have regular massages. It's actually not an indulgence, but along with a good diet and lifestyle, a much better and more effective way of managing your health or any health concerns!

In Hawaiian and many other indigenous cultures around the world, massage has been used as preventative medicine for centuries. This is an age old healing practice that honours the sacred relationship between therapist and client. While the client is being massaged they will feel the very nurturing and unconditional aloha and respect, that is delivered with a hawaiian massage along with the many bodily benefits which include increased circulation, lymphatic detox and drainage, stretching of connective tissues and fascia, easing of muscle tension and even massage and manipulation of internal organs (which is all done externally of course!) One of the most beautiful things about a hawaiian massage is that it incorporates all the forgotten body parts, that we use constantly and daily...the face, hands, toes, feet, fingers and scalp is all attended to (after checking in with the client first) which was a surprising delight to myself when I first experienced it!

And I only ever have Hawaiian style massages...because as a therapist I know that they are the very best!
